A few years ago, we visited the city of Bhaktapur in Nepal. It is one of the most amazing places I have been to so far. Also named "City of Devotees" due to its numerous well-preserved temples, it is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bhaktapur was the biggest Newar Kingdom in the Kathmandu Valley and features beautiful brick buildings with elaborate wood carving decorations. The old city is largely motor-vehicle free (except for a few annoying motorcycles), which lets you fully immerse in its atmosphere of a past lifetime. Cows and goats roaming the streets, women drawing water at the wells and wood carvers hammering away at their masterpieces. Well worth a visit, and do stay overnight at the Peacock Guesthouse with the best hosts ever.
